Clayton, Missouri Gets New Fleet Maintenance Building in $11.7M Public Works Project

The City of Clayton, Missouri now has a new fleet maintenance building after Integrate Construction Partners wrapped up the first phase of a major public works campus overhaul, REJournals reported. The single-story structure sits at 8300 Shaw Park Drive and gives the city's public works team a dedicated space to service trucks, snowplows and heavy equipment year-round.

The building spans 5,750 square feet and combines pre-engineered steel framing with conventional steel for a mezzanine and an overhead crane system. Inside, it holds four vehicle service bays, a tire and machine shop, parts storage, a five-ton overhead crane maintenance bay and offices for vehicle maintenance staff. Construction launched in October 2025.

The project was not straightforward. The site sits on a dead-end street with a low overpass blocking standard delivery routes, forcing the team to unload materials in an adjacent park and ferry them to the site on smaller trailers and equipment. An elevated MetroLink rail track bisects the property, which required careful coordination during steel erection. Contaminated soils and groundwater also turned up during excavation, leading to remediation work with geotechnical engineer Shannon and Wilson and clearances from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to pump excess groundwater off-site.

Integrate President Scott Zola described the coordination challenge directly: "This highly intrusive construction project was coordinated with city staff on a daily basis to minimize any disruption to ongoing fleet maintenance and snow salting and removal operations taking place during the winter months."

The city's public works department kept running throughout construction, which given the winter timing adds some weight to that coordination effort.

Phase 2 is the larger piece. It involves extensive renovations to an existing 17,000-square-foot maintenance building, adding more than 6,500 square feet of new office and training space for public works staff, along with HVAC and lighting upgrades. The second phase also calls for a new 1,500-square-foot truck wash bay, a 2,000-square-foot parking canopy, a 6,700-square-foot truck storage canopy, relocated bulk material storage, an upgraded fuel dispensing station and new asphalt throughout. Completion is targeted for January 2027.

H Design Group, based in Springfield, Missouri, served as architect. Navigate Building Solutions acted as the owner's representative.

The full two-phase project is valued at $11.7 million. For contractors and municipal project teams watching public works procurement in the St. Louis metro, the site constraints here, contaminated ground, a rail easement, a restricted access street, are the kind of conditions that tend to drive change orders and schedule pressure. That the city kept operations running and Phase 1 closed on schedule is the detail worth tracking as Phase 2 gets underway.
