Poettker Construction promotes Jon Carroll to EVP and chief innovation officer

Poettker Construction Company has appointed Jon Carroll as Executive Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer, according to REJournals. Carroll, who joined the Breese, Illinois-based contractor 18 years ago as a project engineer, most recently held the title of Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer before moving into the new role.

In his new position, Carroll will direct Poettker's efforts to identify and adopt technologies, systems, and processes aimed at supporting future business growth, REJournals reported. The work includes aligning innovation efforts across the organization, improving operational efficiency, and equipping project teams with tools designed to strengthen client outcomes.

The promotion is notable less for the title than for what it says about where mid-size regional contractors are putting their attention. Creating a dedicated C-suite role for innovation, separate from operations, suggests Poettker's leadership believes the two functions now require distinct focus. That is a structural choice, not just a personnel one, and it reflects a broader pattern in construction: firms that built their reputations on project execution are increasingly treating technology adoption as a discipline in its own right rather than a task layered onto an operations chief's existing responsibilities.

Carroll's background makes him an unusual pick for the role in a useful way. Most chief innovation officers at construction firms arrive from outside, carrying technology credentials but limited field experience. Carroll's path ran the other direction: nearly two decades inside the same organization, moving through project delivery, operations, and client relationships before landing here. That depth gives him credibility with the teams he will need to bring along, which is often where innovation initiatives stall regardless of how well they are designed at the top.

What the REJournals report does not establish is the scope of any specific technology investments Poettker is planning, the timeline for Carroll's initiatives, or whether the firm is responding to competitive pressure from larger contractors that have moved earlier on construction technology. Those details would sharpen the picture considerably. For now, the appointment itself is the signal worth watching.
